My check off list is rapidly dwindling and I couldn't be happier! I bought a digicam so my uploading woes will soon be at an end! The events experienced with trying to haul people to my apartment to get progress shots and then badgering them to send those shots to me has been trying (to say the least). Only reinforces my theory of: "if you want something done you have to do it yourself" and that whole thing about independent self-reliance. I will be throughly ecstatic when my digicam gets here in the expected 3 days. w00t! I mean, at this point, so much of what I will be posting about today is old news to me and I hesitate to even post it. BUT it's news to you. ;)
My attention has recently been focused on the jacket. Once the jacket is completed (which should be happening tonight) it officially marks the bulk of the costume being done leaving me to attend to the fine tuning of "detailing". :D Alright so before I delve into the ins and outs of the jacket construction let me share with you my new piercings!
The positioning isn't *exactly* where I would have liked it to be, but the piercer insisted that my ear ridges were too small to be able to support the piercing and it would have most likely rejected had I gotten them a half inch or so higher (as I requested). Well bollucks to tiny ears then. He also thought the smaller diameter hoop (on top) would have been too small of a diameter for the lower one so I had to go a size up which was a tad disappointing as well. But as it is, there were a few complications threading the hoops through and he had to bend them in the end and once they were in place, re-bend them back into the correct shape while they were still in my ear. The top is a 12 gauge and the lower is a 14 gauge. I have a history of my body rejecting piercings (as I am allergic to metal) but keep on getting pierced so we'll see how this turns out for me. I highly suspect that my issues before were more caused by faulty in-mall piercers telling me wrong advise. Turns out rubbing alcohol and constantly rotating your piercings is a surefire way for them to FAIL. I hounded the piercer for all the correct advice this time and will be taking proper care of it so hopefully it'll all turn out okay. ;)
Moving right along to the jacket (complete with crappy cell phone pictures!). Although this has already been successfully dyed and I have begun assembly, let me pretend as though this were all current information. ;) Making the pattern for this went pretty smoothly and I only had to make a few minor alterations to the finished muslin draft. When stitching it together I was sure to finish up the top stitching so there would be no measuring surprises for the finished draft. I am very pleased to report that my efforts payed off splendidly and everything fit as it should first try. My only concern is that the sleeves (for whatever reason) twist in at the seams. But they do so symmetrically and it looks stylized so I may just keep it this way. Regardless, I will be looking into *why* exactly it did what it did so I can keep tabs on that as a possible future technique. :)
Since there were no complications what-so-ever and I really don't have anything new to report. Here is a sneak peek at how it is coming along. Enjoy!

I generally ALWAYS hand dye anything that needs to be dyed. I feel that I have more control over the saturation that way. This time, however, since I was dying the fabric for an entire garment as opposed to a single piece, I opted to "Machine Dye" the fabric to encourage a flawlessly even spread of dye. Sadly, I only had a 1/2 bottle of the purple that I had found so I anticipated having to re-dye it to darken the color. I, foolishly, did *not* consider the possibility of fraying fabric. >_<
Pre-treating your fabric is ALWAYS something that I *said* I should practice, but (for whatever reason) just never really did. I always ended up becoming overly impatient to work on the costume and have it completed to I said bollucks to the pre-treatment phase and on to the construction. SO far it has never been a problem. Although, in my own defense, I don't know to what extent the pre-treatment would have helped in this case seeing as they were cut pattern pieces with no selvage.
Anyways, the end result of last nights dying for Bonne Jenet was a heaping pile of frayed edges tangled together into one smirking failure. Tragic. BUT... I am not yet willing to start afresh and re-cut new fabric for her. I still believe it's workable! We'll see after this second dye job. After a highly productive week of pressing ahead, I think I finally slammed into a recess in my energy. Either that or we are witnessing senility in action. /snicker. I think I must've sewed pieces backwards at least three times. >_< BUT! In the end they all fit how they were supposed to. Phew. I may have to go back and lengthen the darts, but that'll take only a second and will be the last thing that I do to it, so I'm not too concerned about it.
After the pieces were all correctly assembled, I went back and finished off the lower hem of the shirt for a clean finish along with the armholes, but there was a wrinkle in the fabric at one point so I took out the seam on the arm holes and am re-doing that tonight. The only thing left with the shirt after that is too mark the guidelines for the buttons and attach them among a few other minor adjustments. I think I'll be focusing on the jacket after that. :)

This costume is absolutely speeding by! Funny story: my room mate came home extremely drunk last night and, at first, I hadn't the slightest idea because this is such a rarity. It became apparent, however, when he came into my room and started asking questions about what I was making and looks at the reference pictures I have tacked to the wall next to my dress form. He looks at the picture I have featured to the left and jumps into this lecture about "respecting my body" and how I shouldn't do the costume because of the T&A. He then proceeds to look at the picture tacked directly below it (which is a full view of the picture used in the banner) and exclaims how cute she was and how I should consider making a costume for her instead. XD It took me about a 1/2 hour to explain that it was the same girl at the the statue image was merely a fan service shot. LOL'd. I got a kick out of that one...
First thing is first, I got PERFECT fabric! Well... nearly perfect. I decided to use a Garbadine Twill because being that she *is* a pirate, it made sense to me to have the fabric be something sturdy and more canvas-y looking as opposed to prom-dress satin style. :P The only problem is that amongst all of the magnanimous glory that is the Fashion District, I couldn't find a Twill of any sort in the right color. T^T. I decided that I would buy it in white and do the dying myself (which is what happens tonight after work). For the burgundy bits, I found a flawless color in corduroy at Michael Levine! YESSS! Corduroy has a similar stiffness to the Twill that I purchased so they compliment each other well. Also, it being corduroy gives it very subtle stripes on the belt, gloves, and underskirt. Stripes are NOTORIOUS pirate fashion so I was pleased by the prospect of that. :)
I don't know about you, but I order my steps of creation based on ease and convenience. I would have preferred to have been able to paint her eye patch and telescope, but since I lack both the paint as well as the items themselves, I moved on to making the belt instead. This is an example of what I mean by convenience:
The gold trim I used is about 1 1/2 inches in width and needed to be pressed in halves before I could attach it. I measured out the elastic (which is around 4 inches in width), the fabric (making sure the ribbing of the corduroy was facing the correct direction) and the trim itself. I then turned on the iron and while waiting for that to heat up, stitched the fabric to the elastic. This was enough time for the iron to be ready so I pressed the trim and sewed it on.
The order of the tasks that you do is important if you want to maximize your time and minimize clean-up. Carefully consider what items you have and what you need to do to them to effectively decide how you want to organize your construction process.
The belt turned out looking fabulous. Once again, I apologize for the lack of picture progress updates. It really is a bummer about that camera. :( I opted to make the belt overlap in a point (like the statue) because it looks more like a belt that is a part of her outfit and less like a poorly constructed loop of fabric tossed on as an after thought. ;) It won't fit over the shoulders of my dress form, but it *does* fit over mine. Yay for adjustable limbs!
I stitched together the mock-up that I had previously cut muslin for (darts and all) and tested the fit on my dress form. It turned out to be too baggy in some areas, but I am okay with that A) because I would rather it be slightly too large than too small and B) because no one gets it perfect on their first shot. I pinned it to a more correct fit and made the necessary adjustments. Once satisfied with the shape of my mock-up, I de-constructed the entire thing and used my finished pieces as the pattern for the fabric itself.
I cut out absolutely all of the fabric I will need to make this dress so I wouldn't have to bother with pinning and cutting more later on and put the remaining fabric away for a rainy day and added a swatch to my swatchbook. I even cut out the elastic needed for the leg holster and the choker that attaches to the dress straps. Now that I have all of my final pieces cut and ready to go, I will be dying them tonight because I just happen to be fortuitous enough to have stumbled across some purple dye. w00t! Of course I will be testing on a scrap before I attempt the whole dress. If in the event that it gets screwed up (god forbid) I have enough extra to be able to re-do it. But obviously I'd rather not have to do that. >_<

I'm so excited to have already started on this costume! I went ahead and bought myself a telescope, an eye patch, and shoes that should be arriving within the week at which point I can begin my modifications. /grin
Last night I went over to JoAnn's Fabrics and bought myself the dress pattern for Bonne Jenet. Looking through all the various dress pattern choices, I decided to go with VoguePatterns #V7428. It has both the scoop back and exaggerated V-neck that I was looking for. The only thing is that the slit is in the back as opposed to running up the thigh so I will have to change this. I will be using pattern C (the 3rd one shown) by the way.
I already have the long blonde wig and blue contacts (or are they purple? I have both sets) so BLAMO my collection is finally large enough to merit multiple uses! woo hoo!
At any rate, after having bought the pattern I summarily went home and cut out all interfacing and muslin. The interfacing has been set aside for later use after I buy the fabric, which is scheduled to happen tomorrow. I am once again hitting up the Fashion District seeking supplies to sustain my growing obsession. :D I have myself a JAM PACKED weekend so I don't think I will be working on either this or my secret other project (which is also making fabulous progress in leaps and bounds, by the way) until Sunday Night at the very earliest. T^T This actually makes me kinda sad because I feel like I am on a roll and don't want to stop (insert Ocarina of Time Rolling Goron reference here).
I decided last minute to go to Fanime 2007 in San Jose, Ca. Yay for completely arbitrary con decisions!!! This means I begin on a NEW cosplay endeavor. I am pleased to introduce my new project, Bonne Jenet of Fatal Fury. Of course my other projects are still all going on at the same time, but I am a master of juggling these sorts of things! Also, let it be noted that I will *not* be posing with my skirt slit hovering directly over my ass. Skirt slits stay against the thigh thank you very much. Also, I think this is the borderline hentai figure or something because while she *does* have a low cut top, it is not so stripper-core. XD This is, however, one of the better statues and so I use it as reference (all skankiness aside). Hee hee.
Lo and behold it is done (mostly). Okay, so I need to make the bow in the back and my attempt at styling the wig like her hair looked craptacular so i opted for this untainted wig instead of the gnarly-gross wig. BUT I still totally dig this costume. And OMG the shoes were absolutely ripping apart my feet. There is a reason Ms.illiara does not wear heels and instead sports her combat boots daily. :P

The minor changes I made that seems like small things, but make all the difference have mainly been made to the over-skirt. The farthingale underneath was causing me to have a very squat shape so I took in the waist cincher part a bit more to give me more contour as opposed to looking like I have a 2-inch torso. hee hee hee. Also, the waist cincher wasn't connecting with the top as ideally as I would've liked and kept slipping down so I resolved to baste it into place. This is actually something I may hand sew in the car on the way down because god knows that I will have ample time o the drive to Arizona and with only a few short evenings free for working on this available before the con, I need to utilize my time to the best of my abilities.
The under-skirt showed a bit of ribbing from the farthingale sneaking through texturally so I made a 2nd layer. This also helped hid seam lines in a tidy manner, which I am more than pleased about. The elastic waist that I had planned was thwarted when it occured to me that no matter how wide my zig zag stitch was set to, the fabric simply did not have enough give to merit using elastic effectively. A simple solution to this was adding a hidden zipper. Hurrah for fast and easy solutions!
Lastly, I would like to add a flounce to the lower hem of the over-skirt to allow for a slightly longer skirt length. When I walk around you can see red peeking out when the over-skirt raises slightly. A flounce should stop that dead in its tracks. AND (dare I say) help to hide the seam lines, which is like my all time favorite thing ever; the more hidden seam lines I have the better!
I think a stop to the hardware store is in my immediate future so I can get the needed items for the successful styling of the wig and a wire frame for the gianormous bow on the back. No wimpy, drooping bows here! I also hope to have all but the gloves completed fro Adelheid by tonight. Phew! Only 15-20 hours available in my schedule to finish these! I wish I had access to a camera for AMPLE picture updates.

Wow! Almost finished! And just in time for Anizona! The only thing that bugs me about the costume are the drastically varying fabric choices that I see in my reference pictures. Some feature a rose pattern and other do not. I opted for not because when I initially began fabric shopping I bought plain red fabric and then found more pics and saw the discrepancy. T_T Ah well, no big issue.
Making that waist cincher was a lesson to be sure! It was my very first time working with boning (as I had previously mentioned) and I didn't think to consider that it would not fold when I had to finish my hem lines. >_< It turned out to be no big deal though because all I needed to do was make a few careful snips and be on my way. The cording brought my waist cincher and my over-skirt together without a hitch, I am pleased to report. However, It doesn't come to as sharp of a V as I would've liked. Perhaps there is something I can do about this. Hmmmmmm. Also, My farthingale turned out to be just slightly longer than my skirt so I merely added a flounce and TA-DA problem solved!
Her top has the added detail of rouging simply because I dig it. Considering I am not working from solidified details, I see no problem with taking a few slight liberties in the construction of this costume. Besides, Rose Bernstien is such an appallingly obscure character that no one is going to chastise me for rouging the top. :P I bought her shoes at the Fashion District on Saturday. And because there are absolutely ZERO pictures of her shoes, I opted to buy an adorable pair that I thought best suited the costume. I think they go rather well.
Lastly, I finished up my tiara. I took the spray painted base that I had previously done and measured out the metal that was to be cut and adhered to the backside to get the red interior. It took a few attempts to get the measuring right. Mainly, it was just a lot of eyeballing. I spray painted the interior and let it dry before hot gluing it to the back of the tiara. Realizing that hot glue is utter shit, I quickly removed it and super glued it instead. This came out with a far cleaner finish. Yay! Last thing to do was to change my cubic zirconium from white to red. Success!
All that is left is the underskirt, which should take me all of 30 minutes to complete and the bow, which should take me about the same amount of time. Oh yea, errrr, and styling my wig, which actually has me rather intimidated. T_T Wish me luck! Pics to come when I borrow a friend's camera! Failing that there is always the terrible quality of my camera phone. T_T

Sadly, my room mate left the digital camera in the men's bathroom of Downtown Disney so there will not be any suitable picture updates for a little while. :( As much as this makes me one sad panda, it is not enough to stop my rampage of progress! This weekend I progressed on three costumes!
On Saturday I went to the Los Angles Fashion District (which I have been making a habit of going to every weekend for the past month) and collected the necessary supplies to begin constructing my Rose Bernstein costume. My first purchase was a farthingale, which sent me into a fit of giggles because I have always found them rather cool and have wanted one for quite some time. A farthingale, for those of you that are unfamiliar, is a conic skirt worn underneath your visible skirt in order to give it that super poofy look that is otherwise very difficult (if not impossible) to attain. Luckily for me, farthingales are "collapsible" so it's fairly easy to store.
Next we browsed around for both the red and black fabrics needed, which we found with relative ease. However, locating suitable piping that matched the color of the red fabric proved slightly more difficult. In the end, I found some beautiful corded piping that was just the right thickness and color at the back of one of the last fabric stores that we popped into before the district started closing up shop. I'm going to deviate from the chronological order of events for a minute so I can discuss the progression of items as they come up. I think it should be easier to follow that way. ; )
Later that night, I created my muslin mock-up for the waist cincher and subsequently cut the fabric for it. This was my first time working with boning (the name at which my friends incessantly displayed their mirth when I declared that I had run out and "needed more boning") and I found it to be far less intimidating than I had initially thought. I decided to sew the boning to the interfacing rather than to the fabric so I could hide the seam lines and work on a more solid foundation. It worked. : ) In my haste to complete the waist cincher, however, I finished the edges on the lower portion when I had meant to do so to the top. Needless to say, that lead to seam-ripping goodness. : P Tonight I plan on attaching the outer skirt to the waist cincher and finishing up the eyelets and piping. But I digress.
Now back to the day at hand! Finding a suitable base for the tiara was far more difficult than I would have imagined. There was an over abundance of Quinceañera tiaras displaying their shimmering "15" smack dab in the middle. I would have preferred to have gotten one without a "15" emblazoned on the front, but if all else failed, I always had my power tools handy. :D Luckily, we ducked into one final shop before heading out and found what we were looking for! I brought it home and spray painted it the correct color. Now all I have to do is replace the old cubic zirconium with the correct red color as the entire tiara had initially been entirely white/silver. The search for the tiara was mighty frustrating because I swear that vendors in the LAFD act more like car salesmen than they do shop owners. Ugh!

Following our exhaunt of the Fashion District, we headed over to an army surplus store where I bought an old ammunition box and medical rucksack to convert for my Aprile cosplay. I got some nicely textured, matte spray paint to give it more of a grungy feel rather than having it gleam with fresh paint. All that is left to do on that is the detailing! For the rucksack I went through four bottles of So-Soft Fabric Paint and have still yet to complete the painting! I anticipate getting that all wrapped up tonight though. :) Which means that the only thing remaining for my Aprile cosplay are the gauntlets (which will also be used for both my Delta and Alpha Cammy) and the shortening/thinning of the tie. Can't wait until completion!!!
The last cosplay that I vigorously pursued last weekend was one of my few "secret projects". Shhhhh!
>_>
<_<
I focused primarily on the dying for that project, after three separate dying sessions came out utterly fabulous! This Secret Side Project of mine is now completed and ready for shooting, which is scheduled to happen this weekend. All that is left is picking up some blonde hair extensions and I'm good to go! This project is never likely to appear at any con; it was more something that I did because I found it too humorous to pass up. Besides, I think Stefan will get a huge kick out of it, too.
